Tabbing requirements are determined by the fold configuration of the mailing piece.

- Fold at the top with open bottom - double tab
- Perforated tabs are not an acceptable closure method for bar-coded rates.

3) What are the options for postage application?
- Indicia – pre-printed copy in boxed format identifying postage class, permit number and mailing post office.
- Meter – red imprint applied in-line on inserting equipment or off-line, this imprint identifies postage class and meter number.
- Stamp – Postage stamp affixed to mailing piece.

- Post Card
Minimum – 3 ½ x 5 and .007 thick
Maximum – 4 ¼ x 6 and .009 thick
- Letters
Maximum – 6 1/8 x 11 ½ and ¼” thick

5) What is a Postnet Barcode?
In 1980 the Postal Service invented a unique bar-coding method called Postnet, an acronym for Postal Numeric Encoding Technique.  The Postnet Barcode is a graphic method of encoding Zip + 4 information and is usually unique for each address.  This information is used for sortation of letter and flat size mail.
Every mailpiece in an automation rate mailing must bear a qualifying barcode.

6) What are the benefits of Bar-coded Mail?
- Faster mail processing.
- Reduction in postage costs for the mailer.
- Reduction in operating costs for the Postal Service.
More consistent delivery times and minimizes delivery errors.

7) What are the proper Indicia formats?
- Effective January 10, 2001 the words BULK MAIL will no longer be allowed for standard mailing indicia. There is no change for first class or non-profit indicia's. See examples below:
